Welcome to the SMIT2006 Conference

Under the Presidency of Richard Satava we would like to invite you to the SMIT 18th International conference 11-14 May 2006.

Not only will the beautiful site stimulate the scientific spirit of this meeting but also the extremely high level of scientific quality of presenters and the innovative character of the topics. New medical technologies which will change the way of life in a variety aspects through revolutionizing diagnostics and minimally invasive therapeutic medicine.

The Society for Superelastic and Shape Memory Technologies SMST holds its 4th conference back to back with SMIT 8 - 11 of May at Asilomar. As an overlap with SMST we have joint sessions on the use of Nitinol in Medicine with a hands on seminar on interventional and surgical devices on May 11. Special focus sessions will cover Advanced Polymers and BIO MEMS for medical application sponsored by the J&J MEMS group and the SMIT Task force SMIT MEMS
One of the most challenging topics has become the MR Safety and Compatibility of Medical Devices. Current regulations require MR safety and compatibility testing of medical implants. The key questions is the possibility of allowing scans for patients with pace makers and other active implants. An introduction to the technology is given and the key problems on the risk for the patients in conjunction with medical devices will be discussed and explained for an interdisciplinary auditorium. We are very grateful for Biophan Inc. becoming the major sponsor for this event and providing key note lectures to the sessions. As side from this 1st Biophan Symposium on MR Safety and Compatibility we are planning an open to public session on the importance of the medical devices in general for the patient including the topics of

· Importance of MRI safety and compatibility of medical devices

· Potential of MEMS and NANO-Technology

· Value of Robotics in Medicine.

We proudly house the 1st Symposium on Image Guided Robotics in co organisation with Kevin Clearly, Georgetown University Washington DC, in cooperation with key groups in image guided robotic field. A workshop will provide basic information on robotic systems in general, principles of application in medicine including regulatory issues and a “hands on seminar” to use robotic systems for simulated clinic procedures on models.

Other areas will be covered by special focus sessions on the Operating Theatre of the Future and Simulation and Training for physicians to improve the quality of medical interventional and surgical procedures. Key areas of interest are spinal replacement parts and minimally invasive spine therapy (Stryker Inc.) and special topics on advanced medical device concepts (JJ ND&C) and medical device design (Cannuflow Inc.) . Advances in urgency medical care will be covered by MYOTECH Inc. The allied disciplines of pharmacological treatment with a core emphasis on non invasive pharmaceutical treatments and oncology will be sponsored by OncoVista inc.. The true advance in minimally invasive procedures will be stem cell treatment, gene therapy, tissue engineering and therapeutic imaging. We are going to cover the topic of micro tubuli and micro tubes with its great potential for medical applications under sponsorship of NaturalNano Inc.

We are looking forward to welcome your at SMIT 2006 and we would be very much interest to receiving your interest in co sponsoring of the SMIT conference

With kindest regards

Richard Satava
